ABOUT THE MONMOUTH COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL . . . . .
The Monmouth County Arts Council is a private, non-profit organization that is the official arts agency for Monmouth County. The council is an umbrella organization of more than 70 member groups, hundreds of individual and family members and a host of business arts partners.
Our History
In 1971, the Junior League of Monmouth County conducted a survey that identified the need for a central agency to coordinate and assist all County arts organizations and individual artists. That October, with seed money from the Junior League and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the Monmouth County Arts Council was founded. Composed of member groups, individual artists and patrons of the arts, the council began promoting public interest in the arts, providing assistance and services to arts organizations, institutions and individuals, and enhancing the impact of the arts and arts education on the quality of life in Monmouth County.
In December of 1973, an anonymous donor provided the arts council with the funds to purchase Walter Reade's Carlton Theater, 99 Monmouth Street, Red Bank. The theatre was renamed The Count Basie Theatre in 1984 after the death of Red Bank native, William James "Count" Basie.
On July 1, 1999, the Monmouth County Arts Council divested itself of The Count Basie Theatre in order for each organization, theater and council, to better focus on its individual mission.
